Pastorela is a Ballet-Opera in one act. Lew Christensen collaborated with Jose Fernandez, fellow Ballet Caravan dancer. The work included music by Paul Bowles and took from traditional songs orchestrated by Blas Galindo with words by Rafael Alvarez with scenario by Jose Fernandez and costumes by Alvin Colt, drawing from original sources inspiring the work. The work premiered during the Ballet Caravan South American 1941 Tour on June 27 at Teatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (previously presented in open dress rehearsal on May 27, 1941 at the Little Theatre of Hunter College, New York, NY. The premiere cast included John Kriza, Charles Dickson, Lew Christensen, Fred Danieli, Gisella Caccialanza with four female dancers in supporting roles.
