Metropolitan Opera (American Ballet)

In 1935, Lew and Harold Christensen joined Lincoln Kirstein and George Balachine's fledging American Ballet. While not a part of the premiere performances in March 1935, Kirstein described Lew as "a focus of [American Ballet's] stripling seasons" (Sowell, 105). This early work with American Ballet and its performances at the Metropolitan Opera House launched a new chapter of Lew's professional career and laid the foundation which would establish him as the first American Premier Danseur
